Rain gutters might not be glamorous, but they quietly protect your home from thousands of dollars in water damage each year. Cleaning them out twice a year — typically spring and fall — is one of those must-do tasks most of us would rather outsource.
If you’re hiring a professional gutter cleaning service, make sure you’re asking the right questions before letting anyone climb a ladder at your house. These expert-backed questions will help you find a trustworthy contractor who’ll do the job safely, efficiently, and at a fair price.
And because I love making life easier, be sure to download my free printable Gutter Cleaning Service Comparison Worksheet at the end of this post to track estimates and notes from multiple contractors.

My Story: Why I Started Asking More Questions
We’ve used the same gutter cleaners for over ten years. They’ve been reliable, reasonably priced, and no major complaints — except the occasional “Hey, don’t forget me this fall!” reminder.
But when my neighbors started raving about another local gutter guy, I got curious. Maybe he offered better customer service or lower prices. Or maybe I just wanted to see what else was out there.
So I reached out for new quotes — and that’s when I realized I wasn’t even sure what I should be asking. A little research led me to these key questions homeowners should ask any gutter cleaning professional before hiring.
#1: How Long Have You Been in Business?
Experience matters — especially when someone’s climbing ladders and working around your roofline. A company that’s been in business for years usually has the right safety equipment, training, and process down pat.
Also ask:
- Do they have experience with homes like yours (multi-story, older roofs, steep pitches)?
- Do they know how to handle seasonal debris common in your area — pine needles, oak leaves, maple helicopters, etc.?
If they operate out of a home garage or truck, that’s not automatically bad — but if they can’t provide a business address or references, consider it a red flag.
#2. Are You Licensed, Bonded, and Insured?
This one’s non-negotiable. Any contractor working on your home should carry a valid business license, insurance, and preferably a bond.
Why it matters:
- If a worker is injured on your property and the company isn’t insured, you could be liable for medical bills.
- If your siding, gutters, or landscaping are damaged during cleaning, insurance covers repairs.
Ask to see proof of insurance and a current business license. It might feel awkward, but reputable professionals expect it.
According to Better Homes & Gardens, Chris Counahan, President of LeafFilter Gutter Protection, recommends verifying that your service provider is both licensed and insured — especially since “at least twice a year is the typical recommendation for cleaning in most regions.”
#3: Are Your Employees Background-Screened?
When anyone’s working around your home — especially if you’re not there — you deserve peace of mind. Ask whether the company performs background checks or uses the same trusted crew each season.
Many small, local gutter companies use the same technicians year-round for roofing and maintenance work, which is a good sign. But if the contractor avoids answering or frequently hires temporary help, that’s worth noting on your worksheet.
#4: How Do You Clean Gutters?
Not every company cleans gutters the same way. Some use high-pressure washers or air blowers, while others remove debris manually with scoops and brushes.
Ask what equipment they use and whether the job includes:
- Downspout flushing (so clogs don’t back up into the gutters)
- Minor repairs like tightening loose hangers or resealing joints
- Cleanup (will they bag debris or leave it in your yard?)
If they use pressure washers or gutter vacuums, confirm that they know how to avoid damaging seams and joints.
For comparison, The Home Depot describes their process as including “debris removal, gutter flushing, and downspout clearing” — exactly what you want from any pro.
Honestly, I don’t think the average homeowner knows which method is best to clean their gutter system. That’s one of the reasons you hire a professional gutter cleaning company, right? But, ask the question. Why? 1. A reputable service will clearly communicate their process. 2. When the workers show up, you have an idea of what they will be doing…..
#5: What is Your Customer Satisfaction Guarantee?
A confident company stands behind its work. Look for a simple guarantee, such as:
“If your gutters clog again within 60 days, we’ll return for free.”
Some may offer photo proof before and after cleaning, or warranties on minor repair work. If a company refuses to guarantee results at all, consider that a warning sign.
#6: Can I Have a Free Estimate?
You should never agree to gutter cleaning without a written estimate. Verbal quotes can be forgotten or “reinterpreted” later.
Ask that your written estimate includes:
- Total cost (flat rate or per linear foot)
- Scope of services (cleaning, flushing, inspection, debris disposal)
- Expected duration and number of workers
- Any optional add-ons like gutter guard installation or roof inspection
According to The Spruce, the average cost of professional gutter cleaning ranges from $120 to $250 for a single-story home, depending on size, accessibility, and debris levels.
#7: Where Can I Read Verified Reviews?
Online reviews give you a real-world snapshot of reliability. Check:
- Google Business Profile (most accurate and visible)
- Better Business Bureau (for complaint records)
- Angi and Yelp for local reviews
Then ask the contractor directly: “Where can I see your most recent testimonials?” A reputable company will gladly point you to specific review sites or offer phone numbers for past clients.
Bonus: Do You Offer Gutter Guard Maintenance?
Even if you’re not ready to install gutter guards, it’s good to ask if the company works with them. Some contractors specialize in cleaning and maintaining guards, while others avoid them entirely. Knowing ahead of time can help you plan for future maintenance.
Contractor Comparison Worksheet
The best way to choose the right gutter cleaning service is to compare licensed and insured companies with proven experience, great reviews, and fair pricing — not necessarily the lowest bid.
To make that easier, I’ve created a free printable worksheet you can use to compare up to three contractors side-by-side:
- Track customer service impressions
- Record answers to each of the 7 questions
- Note estimate costs and special services
FAQs: Gutter Cleaning 101
How often should I clean my gutters?
At least twice a year — once in spring and once in fall. Homes surrounded by trees may need more frequent cleanings.
Do gutter guards eliminate cleaning?
No. Guards reduce buildup but still require periodic rinsing and inspection for clogs.
What happens if I don’t clean my gutters?
Overflowing gutters can cause water to seep into your foundation, siding, and basement — leading to costly repairs.
Can I clean gutters myself?
Yes, but only if it’s safe. Always use a sturdy ladder, work with a partner, and avoid cleaning during wet or windy conditions.
Wrapping Up
Hiring a gutter cleaning service shouldn’t be guesswork. With a few smart questions — and your printable comparison tool — you’ll quickly spot which contractors are trustworthy professionals and which to skip.
And while I’ll still joke with my kids to “do as I say, not as I do,” I’ll also be booking our fall gutter cleaning with confidence this year.
