Smart Home Setup Checklist for New Homeowners (Without the Overwhelm..)

Last Updated on October 8, 2025

Moving into a new home? There’s a TON of stuff to accomplish to get your new home set up just right.  I know, I’ve been there.  But while you are thinking about where to set up the television, organize the linen closet, etc… it’s also a great time to add a few smart home touches.  Smart gadgets like video doorbells, smart locks, and automated lighting don’t just look modern—they make everyday life easier, safer and more convenient.

I’ve created this free printable smart home setup checklist to help decide which devices to add to your new house, so you can settle in with comfort and confidence—without feeling overwhelmed.

To keep things simple (and not overwhelm you with tech jargon), I’ve organized this checklist into three easy-to-understand categories: 1. Smart Entry & Access 2. Smart Lighting & Comfort, and a 3. Helpful Smart Additions. Each category covers beginner-friendly devices that can make your new home feel safer, more comfortable, and… well, smarter!

1. Smart Entry & Access

This group of smart tech focuses on devices that physically control entry points or monitor who comes/goes. These all serve a related function: controlling or tracking access to the home.

Smart Locks: Install a keyless lock so you and your family can come and go without fumbling for keys. Many models let you create unique codes for guests or deliveries.

Video Doorbell: See and talk to visitors from anywhere using your phone—especially helpful for packages or unexpected guests.

Garage Door Controller: Open or close your garage with a tap on your phone and get alerts if it’s left open.

(Optional) Smart Sensors: Add window or door sensors to get notifications when something is opened.

2. Smart Lighting & Comfort

This section covers devices that make your living spaces more comfortable, customizable, and energy-efficient. In other words, they control the environment—lighting, temperature, and yard watering.

Smart Bulbs or Switches: Schedule lights to turn on at sunset, save energy, or set cozy scenes for movie night.

Smart Plugs: Control lamps, coffee makers, or holiday decorations on a schedule or with voice commands.

Smart Thermostat: Adjust your home’s temperature from your phone and cut down on energy costs.

(Optional) Smart Irrigation Controller: Automate lawn watering and save water.

3. Helpful Smart Additions

This last section is a catch-all for devices that enhance daily life but don’t neatly fit under “access” or “lighting & comfort.” These make the home “smarter” but aren’t essential for entry or environmental comfort.

Voice Assistants: Like Alexa or Google Home, to control devices hands-free, set reminders, or check the weather.

Smart Speakers: Play music, podcasts, or news while unpacking or cooking.

Water Leak Detectors: Get alerts if there’s a leak under sinks, behind appliances, or in the basement.

(Optional) Smart Cameras: Keep an eye on pets, kids, or your driveway from your phone.

(Optional) Smart Smoke/CO Detectors: Receive mobile alerts if smoke or carbon monoxide is detected.

4. Quick Setup Tips

  • Connect devices to Wi-Fi before or right after move-in.
  • Group devices by room in your smart home app for easier control.
  • Rename devices clearly (“Kitchen Lamp” instead of “Device 1”).
  • Start with a few basics first, then add more over time.

Smart Home Setup FAQs

Do I need a hub to use smart home devices?
Not always. Many devices work directly with Wi-Fi and your phone. A hub can help if you add lots of devices or want them to work together.

Will these devices work with my phone?
Most major brands support both iOS and Android. Just download the device’s app and follow the setup guide.

What if my Wi-Fi goes out?
Many devices have manual controls. Most reconnect automatically once Wi-Fi returns.

Is it hard to install smart home devices?
Many are DIY-friendly. Video doorbells, smart plugs, and locks usually come with step-by-step guides. You can always hire a local handyman if needed.

Where can I learn more?
In all honesty, I’m not the most tech-savvy.  These beginner-friendly guides from CNET Smart Home, Wirecutter, or Consumer Reports helped me the most.
