Why I Built This Planner

We have lived in our old house for 15 years.  And while we have bought a new frig, washer and dryer, we are still using the oven, stove and dishwasher that came with the house.  Some came with paperwork with an install date, some came with nothing.  We have no clue how long some of our appliances have been hanging on.

This planner is meant for my husband and I to ensure we are not completely surprised when those older (but we don’t know how much older) appliances break down. Or maybe understand which appliances we bought when we moved in might be on their way out already.   This replacement appliance budget planner also helps us understand how much a new appliance might be, and how much we need to start putting away.

What the Appliance Replacement Budget Planner Actually Does

This isn’t just a list of appliance lifespans. It’s a practical budgeting tool built for real homeowners.

With the planner, you can:

  • Track your appliances and the year they were installed
  • See how old each appliance is and how many years it may have left
  • Spot which replacements might be coming next
  • Estimate future replacement costs using updated 2026 planning numbers
  • Enter what you’ve already saved
  • See how much you may want to save each month

It covers nine major household appliances — the ones most likely to surprise you:

  • Refrigerator
  • Freezer
  • Dishwasher
  • Range & Oven
  • Range/Oven Hood
  • Cooktop
  • Microwave Oven
  • Garbage Disposal
  • Trash Compactor

What’s New in the Updated 2026 Version

This isn’t the first replacement appliance calculator I bought.  Maybe you have my old one.  But it was time to update…. This year’s update includes:

  • Updated 2026 replacement cost estimates
  • Updated planning lifespans based on Consumer Reports, InterNACHI, AHAM, HomeGuide, and Homewyse
  • Cleaner layout in MY APPLIANCES
  • More accurate monthly savings formula
  • New “Already Saved” field
  • Updated annual cost increase assumption (2.5%)
  • Clearer status indicators to help you prioritize replacements

How to Use the Appliance Replacement Budget Planner

Step 1: Enter Your Appliances

Open the MY APPLIANCES tab. Choose an appliance and enter the year it was purchased or installed.

The planner automatically fills in:

  • Estimated planning lifespan
  • Suggested planning cost
  • Current age
  • Years left
  • Target replacement year

You can adjust the cost estimate anytime to better reflect your budget and the type of appliance you expect to buy.

Step 2: Review Your Appliance Replacement Timeline

The planner estimates each appliance’s age, years remaining, and target replacement year. It also assigns a status to help you see which appliances may deserve attention first.

Think of this as a planning guide — not a countdown to failure.

An appliance may last longer than expected… or need replacing sooner.

Step 3: Enter What You’ve Already Saved

If you’ve already started an appliance replacement fund, enter the amount you’ve saved for each appliance.

The planner calculates:

  • What’s already saved
  • What’s still needed
  • Suggested monthly savings based on the time remaining until the target replacement year

Step 4: Review Your Replacement Plan

Head to MY REPLACEMENT PLAN for a snapshot of your household:

  • Appliances tracked
  • Replacements to watch
  • Estimated future costs
  • Monthly appliance fund
  • What’s coming next

This tab gives you a clear, at‑a‑glance view of your home’s appliance outlook — perfect for budgeting, planning, and avoiding surprise expenses.

The workbook uses a default annual cost increase of 2.5%. This is a planning assumption, not a prediction, so adjust it if you prefer.

Why This Planner Matters (Especially for Old Houses)

Older homes often come with appliances installed by previous owners — sometimes years before you moved in. You may not know the install date, the lifespan, or how close something is to needing replacement.

This planner helps you:

  • Get organized
  • Understand what’s aging
  • Spread out future costs
  • Build a realistic savings plan
  • Reduce stress when something finally gives out

It’s not about predicting failure. It’s about giving yourself a clearer picture of what’s coming so you can plan ahead with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don’t know when my appliance was installed?

Use your best estimate — the year you moved in, a home inspection note, or the model’s manufacturing date. The planner is flexible. HOWEVER, the post below points out 4 ways in which you can determine appliance manufacture date.

What if my appliance lasts longer than the planning lifespan?

Great! The planner is a budgeting tool, not a prediction. Update the year or adjust the lifespan anytime.

Can I change the suggested costs?

Absolutely. The suggested planning cost is just a starting point. Replace it with your own estimate anytime.

How accurate are these numbers?

Replacement costs and lifespans are planning estimates based on 2026 data. Actual costs vary by brand, features, installation needs, and location.
