Moving into a new home is exciting, but forgetting to set up utilities can cause unnecessary stress. The last thing you want is to arrive and realize you have no electricity or running water. This utilities and services setup checklist will help you get essential services like electricity, water, internet, and other home utilities running smoothly before move-in day PLUS remind you of the documents you need on hand to make it a smooth process. Simple and easy – now if only all of moving could be like this…..
Documents You May Need to Set Up Utilities
Before you pick up that phone or head to the municipality offices to set up or transfer utilities, you are going to need some documents. I hate it when I’ve hauled my cookies all the way down to a town office or utility to be told I didn’t bring a basic piece of paperwork.
Here’s a few documents or requirements from utilities and services to keep on hand just in case.
- Proof of identity (driver’s license, passport, or social security number)
- Lease agreement or mortgage documents
- Previous utility account numbers (if applicable)
- Security deposit (some providers require an upfront deposit for new customers)
2. Essential Utilities to Set Up Before Moving
Okay, now that we have gathered our necessary docs to get this moving train rolling, here’s the essentials utilities and services you need to get turned and activated for your new house.
Electricity
- Contact local providers to set up new accounts or transfer existing service.
- Schedule activation at least a week before moving in to avoid delays.
Gas or Oil
- How is your new home heated? If your home uses gas, check whether you need a technician to turn it on safely.
- If oil, ensure you don’t have an empty tank (especially during a winter move!)
Water & Sewer
- Check with the city or county to set up water and sewer services.
- Some locations may include this in property taxes, while others require separate billing.
- Ensure service is activated by the time you move in.
Trash & Recycling
- Contact your local waste management company to arrange trash and recycling pickup.
- Find out your collection schedule and whether you need to request bins.
Internet & Cable
- Compare providers in your area to choose the best plan for your needs.
- Schedule installation before your move to ensure service is active.

Mail Forwarding
- Set up mail forwarding through USPS to ensure important documents reach your new address.
- Notify banks, credit card companies, and other essential services of your move.
Home Security
- Consider installing a home security system or smart locks for added protection.
- Change locks or rekey doors to ensure previous owners or tenants no longer have access.
Pest Control
- Schedule an initial inspection or preventive pest treatment to keep your new home pest-free.
Lawn Care & Snow Removal
- If your home has a yard, research lawn care providers or plan DIY maintenance.
